You’ve gotten yourself a new camera to capture those hallmark moments- your child’s first steps, or their birthday trip to the zoo. Here are some tips to help you get photographs that do justice to their cuteness and unique personality!

By: Ng Lin-Li

1) Get down to their level

For a more intimate feel, shoot your children at their eye level, rather than from a standing position. Get on your belly if you have to (for newborns), this helps you to photograph more intimate portraits, and keeps their proportions in balance. Shooting from above may make their heads look bigger than their bodies.

2) Keep the eyes sharp

In a photograph of a person, the eyes are usually the most important part. When their eyes are in focus, the photograph tends to have more impact, and better expresses the emotion the child is feeling. A viewer is usually attracted to the sharpest part of a photograph, and keeping your child’s eyes in focus will draw attention there.

3) Relax

Don’t demand that your child smile, or not move, unless you want the photograph to look forced. (I’ve heard parents yelling at their kids to “look happy or else”! As you can imagine, the photographs look anything but joyous.) Let your kids get comfortable doing their favourite activities or enjoying themselves with their favourite toys, then shoot them in action.

Photograph your children to capture their authentic expressions, the way they laugh or talk, or even sulk. Inject fun and energy into the session and kids will respond with great, natural smiles and play. This is the way you want to remember them, and a great representation of their childhood. Leave the “say cheese” type of photographs for other events.

4) Use indirect light

Rather than photographing your children under direct sunlight and getting squinty-eyed photos, move play to an area that is in the shade but well-lit by an open window or surrounding light (like a shaded patio or under a tree). Photograph your children with their faces towards the source of indirect light, and your back towards the light. When the indirect light is reflected in your subject’s eyes, it creates a catchlight (a bright spot) that seems to make their eyes shine. Remember not to photograph your child against an overly bright background, as their faces will come out dark. As far as possible, use natural light, as the on-camera flash tends to make the photograph look washed out and flat.

5) Shoot in Continuous or Burst mode

Especially with energetic kids, it may be hard to catch them at the right moment. Use your camera’s ability to take continuous shots to capture a range of movement (like when they are on the swing in the park), and then select the one with the best expressions and composition. You can also use those shots to create a fun collage of your kids in action.

We all know that the smartphone is great for whiling away your time (Twittering, Facebooking) when you’re waiting to see the doctor. But if you’d rather use that time to catch up on some work, these apps can help boost your productivity, and relieve some stress too.

Good Reading
The iPhone doesn’t make it easy to read PDFs, but GoodReader does. It wraps text to fit your screen perfectly (which means you don’t have to scroll left and right to read the text) and can even handle documents over 1GB. Besides PDFs, GoodReader (Price: US$0.99) lets you efficiently view other types of documents such as MS Office files and high-resolution images.

A To-Do List You Actually Use
What is a smartphone if you can’t keep track of your to-dos on it? There are many task management apps out there, but Toodledo is one of the easiest to use. Add a task, give it a priority rating (high, medium, low), and add fields such as due date, notes and tags. Its interface even resembles the mail app on your iPhone, making it quite intuitive. If you’ve only got a few hours to complete your tasks, use The Scheduler, which will analyse your deadlines and tasks and Toodledo will pick tasks that make the best use of your time.

Read News Offline
With Instapaper you can create offline copies of newspaper articles, making it convenient to read when you’re on an airplane or just some place with bad reception. It’s a great way of reading long articles It does require a bit of planning ahead though, as you’ll need to save the web articles using the Instapaper link. But once you do so, you have a list of all the articles you’ve saved, for reading at any time.

Picture Perfect
It’s not just for note-taking. Evernote can be useful for your business contacts. Use the camera on your smartphone to snap a photo of the business card and Evernote indexes the text in the photo and makes that info searchable. You can use it to easily keep track of your receipts and bills – just take a photo on Evernote. It’s automatically synced, so if you upload it on your iPhone, you can access it online or on your desktop. The basic account is free (and should be adequate for the casual user) but a premium account is $5 a month or $45 a year and offers more upload capacity, more file types, and better security.

Blend Your Boss
There’s the boss, there’s the blender. You can imagine (perhaps with glee) what will happen next. While we are not condoning violence, Joe Cartoon’s Blend the Boss will provide some stress relief and entertainment for those days when work gets you down. You can even upload a picture of your boss and make a boss smoothie. Blend away!

Many women tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves when it comes to airing their views on social media platforms like blogs, Facebook and Twitter. After all, it’s so easy to let off steam with just a few jabs on your keyboard or mobile phone. However, this illusion of privacy can be your undoing if you’re not careful with what you post online.

By: Melanie Lee

We understand — it is just so cathartic to vent online sometimes. The sheer convenience from doing it on your computer or mobile phone, as well as the flurry of support or comments you’ll get from your friends online is quick, easy therapy and makes you feel less alone in the world. However, it’s important to remember that while the Internet is virtual, there are still real-life consequences to your actions on cyberspace and whatever you post up can stay there to haunt you for the rest of your life.

Possible career hazard: Did you know that most companies Google applicants’ names and even check their Facebook and MySpace sites to get an inkling of what kind of lives they lead? As such, you might want to think twice about giving a blow-by-blow account of that drunken Christmas party you had as it just may cause you your dream job. Even if you already in a job, it’s best not to be too forthcoming about how dumb you think your boss (code name: Mr Dumbo) is. As long as you put your real name and pictures of yourself up or reveal the industry you’re in, it would be easy to trace who exactly you’re referring to.

Possible security breach: You never know who’s lurking around your various social networking pages so it’s best to be discerning about the kind of details you post up on such sites. It’s not a good idea to put your telephone number, provide the full details of when you’re going on a holiday, or to whinge about the terrible argument you had with your spouse as it makes you all the more vulnerable to strangers or acquaintances who may have less-than-noble intentions.

The good news is, even if you do need to get something off your chest, it is still possible to do so without revealing too much.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself before posting something online:
a)	Does this fall under the topics that you have told yourself you would like to keep private?
b)	Are there people you’d NOT want to let see what you’ve written? (eg If you’re about to Tweet a photo of the ice-cream sundae you just ordered, is your personal trainer following you on Twitter?)
c)	Does any of the content give away details that may allow any stranger to find out where you live or tail you easily?
d)	Would the people that you write about have any issues about mentioning them in such a public domain?
e)	Do your contacts on your social networks really need to know this about you?

Of course, for the days when you need to vent and let everything and I mean everything out of your system, you may want to stick with the good ol’ paper diary with the metal lock.

Blabbed Out
•	Popular American blogger Heather Armstrong was fired from her job when someone informed her bosses about her entries on work. Of her getting fired, Dooce said, “I really don’t feel like I have the right to be all that bitter. I made my bed; I’ll lie in it.” This incident became so famous that a new term “dooced” was created to describe someone who has been fired because of his or her blog.

•	Sociology professor Gloria Gadsden irked her bosses with Facebook status updates such as “Does anyone know where I can find a very discrete hitman? Yes, it’s been that kind of day” and “Had a good day today. DIDN’T want to kill even one student”. As a result, she’s been put on indefinite leave.

•	Ashton Kutcher twittered a picture of Demi Moore bending over in a white bikini with the caption, “Shhh! Don’t tell wifey”, with Moore retorting via a tweet: “He is such a sneak and while I was steaming his suit too!” This high profile incident mortified Moore’s three daughters so much that they did a family intervention and requested both their mother and stepfather to stop airing such lurid details online.

Digital transitions are becoming a way of life. For those of us who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, we’ve moved from cassette tapes to CDs to MP3s, from VHS tapes to DVDs to Blu-Rays. But e-books look set to stay with the new slew of e-readers (some with multiple purposes), and can be of great use to the busy superwoman.

By: Sharlene Tan

E-books are being read more than ever – the Association of American Publishers reported that e-book sales were up 154.8% by end April 2009, while overall book sales were down by 4.1%. With the Sony Reader, Kindle and the highly anticipated iPad (for now, you can read books on your iPhone or iPod Touch), as well as the various smartphones available, e-books have a plethora of platforms on which to be read.

Convenience Is The Word

Marnie K, an engineer, is one aficionado of e-books and estimates that about 85% of her reading is via e-books. She told Nanzinc.Com that e-books make reading more convenient for her superwoman lifestyle. “I definitely prefer e-books. I like that I can hold the iPhone with one hand and read while walking on my treadmill.” Being able to search for definitions of words is another plus for her, as well as the ability to change the font size and switch to night mode for reading in dimly lit areas.

A Library At Your Fingertips
One of the best things about an e-book reader – or even a smartphone – is its capacity for storing hundreds of books, even out-of-print books. Marnie says that she loves having all her books with her and finds it a more productive way to pass the time. She adds that she no longer loses her place or has to look for a bookmark as the e-book software automatically remembers where she last left off from the last read.

More Space, Less Clutter
The thing about books – especially if you are an avid reader – is the amount of space they take up. For Wired writer Brad Moon, a self-professed book collector/hoarder, his six months with an e-reader came out on the side of e-books.

“I sometimes look at those bookshelves and think of them as 30 square feet of floor space, or 160 cubic feet or so of storage space. If we lived in a McMansion or had fewer kids and animals running around the place, I might leave them alone, but as it is, every square foot of storage space is valuable.”

The Other Side Of The Page: Paper Books Can’t Be Beat?
While e-books offer the ability to have a whole library at hand along with its many other built-in features, there are many ways in which paper books can’t be beat.

Books don’t need a power source, so you don’t have to worry about bringing a charger along with you. They’re easy to pick up at a bookstore. And on that note, bookstores are great places to hang out, wait for friends, people watch and browse for new reads. And while e-books may be great for reading text, they don’t show off graphics and illustrations quite as well – or in some cases, not at all.

They’re hardy. You can drop a book and dust it off, but drop your iPhone or e-reader and your heart will probably sink (to the bottom of the toilet bowl ~ Ed). And to some readers, it’s the feel of books that they miss. As Marnie concedes: “E-books don’t have that ‘new book’ smell!”

Samsung DualView TL225

This slim camera has not one, but two screens for your shooting pleasure. The 3.5-inch screen on the back has ultra high-resolution (the sharpest on the market), and its touch screen capabilities are great for iPhone addicts- finger swipes let you scroll through photos, delete and rotate them. The screen even gives off small “haptic” vibrations so you get the feel of pressing a physical button. The second screen on the front (1.5 inches) takes the guesswork out of self-portraits and displays a numeric countdown in Self Timer mode. It even plays animations in Child mode to encourage your toddlers to look at the camera.

Image quality is good (but not at a high ISO setting) and the camera features a wide-angle lens of 27mm, so you can take groups shots without backing up too far, as well as capture fuller interiors and landscapes. The Advanced Dual Image Stabilization (IS) helps shaky hands capture sharper images with two rounds of stabilization and shoots 1280×720 HD video with a variety of options. The TL225 has a 12.2 megapixel CCD and 4.6x optical zoom. Available in black with red, blue or silver trim.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX7

With a 25mm wide-angle lens and the ingenious Sweep Panorama mode, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC TX7 is perfect for shooting scenery on that trip to Europe. For a seamless 185 degree panoramic shot done completely in-camera, all you have to do is hold the shutter button down and pan across the landscape that you want to capture. The camera shoots and combines the individual sections to give you a sizeable panorama. The TX7 is also great for action shooting, capturing 10 full frames per second, and can focus on close-up subjects 1cm away (most cameras need a minimum of about 3cm).

Image quality is high on this camera, and it can shoot video with exceptional clarity in 1080i AVCHD high definition (as well as 1280×720 HD video). The TX7 performs very well on low-light shots (with the back-illuminated “Exmor R” CMOS sensor) making dimly-lit parties easy to photograph without the flash, capturing more detail and ambience. Another intelligent feature is the Self-Portrait Timer mode, where the camera starts timing (2 seconds) after it detects your face entering the frame. The TX7 has a large 3.5-inch touch screen, a 10.2 megapixel CCD and 4x optical zoom. Available in silver, red, and dark blue.

Nikon Coolpix S1000PJ

The first of its kind, this compact actually turns into a mini-projector, allowing you to project photo slideshows and videos (with sound) onto any wall or white surface (up to six feet away). Images can go up to 40 inches wide, making the S1000PJ perfect for entertaining guests and sharing your personal shots with others.

The S1000PJ is strong on the shooting side too. It helps you to take sharper photos with five Image Stabilization processes, including a high ISO of up to 6400 (great for low light shots), and motion-detection technology that detects moving subjects while you are taking the shot and adjusts shutter speed and ISO accordingly. If that isn’t enough, the Best Shot Selector automatically takes up to 10 shots while the shutter is pressed and saves the sharpest image. Another female-friendly feature is the new Skin Softening function that comes in three different levels to smooth skin in-camera (less visible wrinkles and pimples) and produce better portrait photographs. The S1000PJ has a 2.7-inch screen, 12.1 megapixel CCD and 5x optical zoom. Movies are shot at 640 x 480 resolution at 30 fps. Available in matte black.

Besides a stunning glossy exterior, the latest 15.5” Sony VAIO E Series boasts of plenty of user-friendly features that make this an ideal everyday laptop.

It’s apparent for everyone to see just how good-looking the Sony VAIO E Series notebooks are with its vivid spectrum of colours, patterns and finishes. However, its allure does not just stop there. This latest range of Sony VAIO notebooks has plenty of goodies on in the inside so that it’s not just a notebook to be seen with, but also an absolute cinch to use.

High Performance

The VAIO E Series adopts the latest, cutting edge Intel Architecture “Calpella” which is powered by the Intel® Core™ i3 Processor. With Hyper Threading Technology, multitasking on your notebook becomes a highly efficient affair.
Another big performance boost is the fact that this model also comes with an eSATA port, a time-saving convenience when it comes to data transfer as external eSATA hard disk drives have a 300MB/s transfer rate, which is about 5 times faster than a USB 2.0 drive and performs like a high-speed internal hard disk drive.

Convenient Buttons

With three easy-to-use one-stop buttons at the top of its isolated keyboard – ASSIST, WEB and VAIO, you get quick access to VAIO Care (Sony’s technical support software), Quick Web Access and Media Gallery. There’s also its full-sized, four column numeric keypad which is perfect for typing in numbers in spreadsheets as well as gaming.

Petite Adaptor

This is important for us women who are working on the move and need to make the best out of working space! Sometimes, there’s little point in having such a slim, sleek notebook when there’s a chunky adaptor to lug around and hog up the table. The VAIO E notebook comes with a small AC adaptor that is about 25% smaller than regular adapters.

Intuitive Touchpad

Its intelligent touchpad, which is integrated into the palm rest so that it does not stick out, allows you to do certain functions easily with just a few flicks. For example, if you want to zoom in on a photograph, you just have to pinch two fingers together (and if you want to zoom out, you just have to separate the fingers). Another useful “move” is moving your finger continuously in a circle on the touchpad should you want to scroll the page from the Internet browser or word document.

Are you checking your Blackberry when you wake up in the middle of the night to use the toilet? Do you think, just sometimes, you might prefer playing that new App in your iPhone than — gasp — have sex? You might have a tech addiction. It’s okay to ‘fess up to NanzInc. We’re here to help.

By: Ng Lin-Li

Using technology reaches far into our psyches and personal lives, as we tote our PDAs, iPhones, laptops and cell phones to work, play and even to bed. This makes it easy to develop an obsessive, 24/7 tech habit that could have adverse effects on your relationships and health.

In China, Taiwan and South Korea, teenager tech addicts are checked into boot camps by concerned parents or sent to counselling centres that deal specifically with this problematic phenomenon. In the US, a 45-day program at a beautiful rehab centre for Internet addicts (near the Silicon Valley and Microsoft) costs about S$20,000. Clients learn life skills and are taught how to live a fulfilled life in the real world.

Jacqueline Chong* says technology killed her marriage. Her husband’s addiction to Skype led to an extramarital affair that shipwrecked their relationship two years ago. Says the mother of two, “When you don’t know where to draw the line, when what happens online becomes more real to you than your own flesh and blood, you must recognise you have a problem. Seek help, before it’s too late.”

One husband who does not want to be named, is speaking out against his wife’s Blackberry. “She is on it all the time. I realise she needs to work, but this gadget is just allowing her boss into our bedroom, bathroom, car, kitchen all the time, even at 2am when that crazy boss has a ‘brilliant idea’. I have had to declare our bedroom a BB-free zone. If I find it in there, I’m going to drive over it with my car. I don’t care if it costs $800.”

For many others, tech addiction is not a 20-hour daily online gaming need or trawling online chat rooms for dirty dalliances. Tech addiction could be an uncontrollable urge to be plugged in all the time reading updates on Facebook, a compulsion to respond to text messages immediately, or to check email continuously — regardless of what you are doing. Before your gracious social manners, physical well-being and sleeping hours disappear in the presence of glowing screens, try these tips to keep your relationship with technology in check:

1) Take a break from virtual reality by regularly engaging in actual reality. Take a course, go hiking, learn a sport or even engage in housework- any task that puts you back in the real world and helps you enjoy the real and physical environment will be beneficial. And yes, please leave your iPhone at home or in the car.

2) Limit your Internet usage after work to less than two hours. Before you fall off your chair laughing — it is possible. Decide beforehand what you want to do online and complete them within the time frame, then go offline and catch up with the rest of your real life. It takes discipline but you’ll be thankful you’ve made it a habit.

3) Create boundaries. Give yourself new rules like not texting while eating, and no replying to emails when spending time with your family. Modern technology makes us connected virtually 24 hours a day, and not drawing boundaries can mean we lose out on quality relationships or personal mental space. (The Sheraton Chicago Hotel offers a Blackberry Check-In program, where guests can detox from their tech by checking in their PDAs and phones into a safe!)

4) Plan regular meetings with friends or family. Interact with people face-to-face again and learn to communicate and connect live in person, rather than slipping behind a screen for hours and making only electronic contact. When you’re at lunch or dinner or drinks, turn your mobile on silent.

5) Set intervals to check emails. Rather than refreshing your inbox every 5 minutes (especially if there are other tasks at hand), set specific times to check the mail. This can actually boost your overall productivity and creativity.

6) Find an accountability partner. Get a good friend, colleague or relative to encourage you and help you stick to your new off-tech rules.

7) Talk to a counselor or psychologist. Addictions of any kind often have underlying causes. An addiction to tech may point to deeper personal issues that you may want to resolve.

* Not her real name

Technology can help to save you time in the kitchen – so say the manufacturers of high-tech kitchen gadgets. We sniffed out some of the more useful and accessible gadgets for the cook at home.

Perfect Chill
The Kalorik Tabletop Wine Cooler is the high-tech gadget for the wine aficionado. Not content with a commonplace ice bucket for your luxuriously expensive champagne? Now you can control the temperature at which you chill your wine, right there on the table. This wine cooler has four pre-programmed temperatures for red, white, rose and champagne, but the temperature in each chamber can also be changed manually, which means you can have a bottle of white wine and champagne chilling at the same time.

Cook like a Chef
Sous vide, French for “under vacuum”, is a method of cooking that maintains the integrity and natural flavours of the ingredients by cooking food at low temperatures in vacuum-sealed bags. Restaurant chefs such as Thomas Keller of The French Laundry (he’s written a book about sous vide cooking) have been using this method in their professional kitchens for some years now, but it is only recently that this method has reached the home kitchen with the SousVide Supreme. About the size of a breadmaker, it has a computer-controlled temperature and timer, and lets you cook like a professional without the fuss and muss.

Spill-Proof Recipe Reader
Tired of stained cookbooks? The Demy , a spill-proof recipe reader might come in handy. Stains can easily be wiped off its high-resolution colour touchscreen. Plus, it comes with many other features that would please any cook, such as three built-in timers and a conversion tool, which is always handy when you’re trying to remember how many pounds make up a kilogram.

Most recipes tell you to marinate your meat for a minimum of two or three hours, and some of them are best left overnight. But busy women know how easy it is to forget something like that, and at other times, you just need to have your meat marinated this instant! The Reveo, a vacuum-sealed, rotating barrel allows the marinating process to be sped up, and according to the manufacturer, requires just 2 to 20 minutes, depending on the type of food being marinated. The vacuum supposedly stretches the fibres of the food, allowing the marinade to speedily penetrate all areas.

Deep Fry with Less Oil
The ActiFry by T-fal uses a heat pulse and stirring paddle system, which enables deep frying with far less oil. T-fal says that just one tablespoon of oil is needed to fry one kilo of French fries. This not only makes deep frying healthier, it becomes safer too. The use of this automated deep fryer also means that the smell of cooking oil will not permeate your house.

With thousands of iPhone applications to address your every need, it’s hard to figure out what to install and what to skip. Here is Nanz Inc.Com’s shortcut to some of the best iPhone apps a girl could ever want.
By Lianne Ong

Social Networking

1. Tweetie

Do you Tweet because you have an iPhone or do you get an iPhone because you want to Tweet? Between Twitterific and Tweetie, it is hard to say which is better, but if you Tweet at all, you’ll need either of them. Now you can inundate your friends with incessant updates on what you’re doing.

2. Facebook

Not surprisingly, this is the top free social networking application available. If you already have a Facebook account, you will no problems navigating this app.

3. WhatsApp Messenger

Save your SMSes with this smartphone to smartphone messenger. If your hubby is on a Blackberry you can communicate with him too. Costs US$2.99 to download.

Fitness & Health

4. iPeriod

Gone are the days where you marked a mysterious “X” on the calendar every month. Strictly for women only, this app helps you record when it’s that time of the month. All you do is tap on the start date of your period and it marks out your cycle in pink (choose a standard cycle or customise it). It will calculate your next expected period, ovulation and fertility dates. Set an alert so you will never be caught without a tampon or pad in your bag. For those with painful periods or unusual symptoms, you can record your moods, spotting, and cramp severity levels – which will come in handy, should you ever need to see a doctor about it.

5. iPregnancy

This app helps you keep track of your pregnancy, along with your doctor. Once your due date is entered, the app will keep track of the gestational age of the baby, and countdown to the remaining days to delivery. Handy information about the baby’s growth each week and a name picker keeps your mind busy as your nesting tendencies grow.

6. iBody

If a diet didn’t help you to lose that post-festive season weight, then this program just might. This award-winning app enables you to record key statistics such as keep track of your weight, blood pressure, and activities at all times. Find out which sport will get you to burn more energy and keep on track with your exercise regime.

Shopping & Lifestyle

7. Style.com

For the fashionista, Style.com’s own app is a fashion runway in the palm of your hand. You will be filled in on the season’s latest trends and looks.

8. Gilt On The Go

For the fashion insider, the Gilt Groupe offers the hippest of the hip brands at great prices — but sale only opens at a particular hour GMT and you’ll be racing with hipsters the world over to get that McQ dress at a steal! This app sends you sales alerts on the go, so you can be the first (or almost first) to grab that bargain.

9. HungryGoWhere

Can’t decide where to eat? HungryGoWhere’s app from the popular local review site saves you from arguing where to go for date night.

Utilities & Home

10. Awesome Note

Are you one of those people who can’t get to work until you’ve written a killer to-do list? If you’re fussy about how you organise your tasks, then you will love Awesome Note. The different tabs help you categorise your tasks and you can customise how it looks with different folder icons, fonts and paper backgrounds. With Awesome Note, you can keep notes simple with a post-it style memo, or complex with photo attachments.

11. AllRecipes.com

Your husband’s just told you the boss is coming for dinner, and you’re at the supermarket deciding what to cook. The “DinnerSpinner” function narrows down what you can turn out according to dish type, ingredients and time. As with the website, the recipes are community-rated so you can never go wrong.

Games:

12. Bejeweled

One of the highest grossing game apps, this is popular with many women. Play a better game in landscape mode.

13. Sally’s Spa

Run a virtual spa and see what it takes to make money selling beauty products, giving facials and massages. A bit like Tamagotchi, but much more stylish.
