Asian Woman Entrepreneur: Pamela Lin | Mar-03-2011

Nanz talks to Pamela Lin, owner of online and retail sleepwear and loungewear brand Kooshi.

A note from Nanz:
Talking to Pamela, the owner of Kooshi brought back many memories for me, when I ran my first business many years ago, a small boutique. I was reminded of the hard work of the business, the stocking of inventories, studying of latest trends, going on buying trips, running my own accounts, and being the floor manager as well! I never regretted those wonderful times, even I was very deprived of social life. Retail businesses can be lots of fun but you truly need to love the long hours and meeting people.

Kooshi was formed in 2004, and business began in 2005. Today there are five people in the team, with two boutiques and one web store in Singapore. Kooshi also distributes to Indonesia, Russia, Australia and Oman. The brand is Service Star-accredited.

Pam has done a few things that I wished I did as a young entrepreneur — one of them is to work with a few partners, each focusing on an area they are strong in, to build the business. The interview we had was fun — and fashionable.

Nanz: What is your background professionally?

Pamela: I am a Arts and Social Science graduate from the National University of Singapore. I entered the retail industry after a short flying career with Singapore Airlines. I’ve been in the retail trade for more than 15 years, handling merchandising, marketing, operations etc.

How did you get started?

I was invited by a friend to join her when she started Kooshi. Then later she left the business and I bought over her shares.

How much was the start up cost?

The initial capital outlay was less than S$100,000.

What is the unique selling point of your business?
It’s a niche market that is growing. Our designs are sexy but comfortable and functional. We offer consistent quality control and reasonable prices.
